Transcription Notes:

Below is a transcription of a letter from Agnes Daly to her sister-in-law, Sarah. It was written to her sister in law, Sarah Burgess (nee Lovegrove) of Cassilis, NSW. The deceased children are William (080/08/1899 - 24/08/1899 ) and Margaret (08/11/1894 - 06/05/1895).

A copy of the original of this letter also appears below. It was passed to me by my father, Michael Christian Daly, during his genealogical researches in the late 1970's. Other members of the family also have a copy.

There is no indication of where the original letter is. I have a copy of another letter from Agnes (written in 1910) indicating that her full name is Mary Agnes Daly nee Burgess (1863-1945) wife of Daniel Daly (1853–1925). Agnes is my paternal great grandmother.

My Dear Sister in Law

I expect you will be surprised to hear from me after such a long silence. After hearing of poor Eddy's death we were shifted to the bush and its now we are shifted back to Maryborough. I hope yourself and my little nephew is quite well.

My mother mentioned that you wrote so regular and was so good that you seemed like her own child she would never forget you. I hope you will write still to her for its over twelve months since I heard from her. I have written three times and got no answer. I will be so grateful to you if you would write and let me know when you have heard last from her. I am very uneasy not hearing from home. I am very sorry I cannot help her but the family is so large I can but spare little.

I have had my own troubles I have buried one boy and one girl lately which leaves us nine children living. I have had six boys and five girls but no matter how many you have got you do not like to loose them. I am so anxious to hear about poor mother I hope you will answer this. I have not got a relation in Australia but yourself & child brother. Brother said he is so like our Brother George in his Photo. I wish you could spare me one. As soon as I get my children taken I will send them to your. Let me know about yourself and how your get along. Maryborough is very dull for so near Xmas. I will have them all from school next week Holidays start.

I hope to hear from you soon. Wishing you and nephew a happy Xmas and merry New Year.

Direct your letter to Mrs D Daly

Your sincere sister in law
